Balloons for a balanced lunch is a program Nurti-Serve created to help younger students understand the components of the school lunch. Each of the balloons represents a different food group. The colors of the balloon match the colors USDA “My Plate". When students choose a food of each color then they have a balanced meal.
Yellow represents a Bonus Food.
This is a food that will be an additional source of energy. It adds variety and interest to the menu.
Purple represents a food high in Protein.
This lunch component consists of meat or a meat alternative.
Blue represents a food high in Calcium, Phosphorus, & Riboflavin. This lunch component is a carton of Milk.
Red represents a food high in Vitamin C.
This lunch component consists of a fruit rich in these nutrients.
Green represents a food high in Vitamin A.
This lunch component consists of a vegetable rich in
these nutrients.
